A Dog’s Birthday Cake and Party…

20131125-164652.jpg

Hello again people! BBC1 here. You may have seen our ‘Happy Birthday’ post on Saturday, where we wished Dr Who and our Max and his brother Teddy a very happy birthday. We also promised some photos and the recipe for the dogs’ cake, both of which follow.

We had a marvelous afternoon with our chief taster and sous chef, Lizzie and the boys. You can see how silly and ‘over the top’ we all were from the photos I think. However, it was totally worth it and the dogs adored the cake as we suspected they would…short story re why we suspected after BBC2’s recipe…

We arrived at Lizzie’s to be greeted by this…

It was so sweet! Anyway, the recipe…

Ingredients:
1 kg/2lb 2 oz pigs liver
2 cups plain flour
1 large carrot grated
1 egg

For the icing/frosting:
1x 300g/10oz tube low fat cream cheese
½ tablespoons plain flour
Few drops of food colouring

Method:
In a large jug or high sided bowl cut the pigs liver into smallish chunks, ensuring the sinew is cut into small pieces, and using a stick blender (or it can be done in a food processor) mince the liver. Then add the egg, when the egg is incorporated add the flour, now stir in the carrot and pour the mixture into a baking tin 20cm/8 inch by 30cm/12 inch lined with greaseproof paper.

Cook this in a preheated oven 160c fan for 30 minutes or until cooked and firm to the touch, leave to cool for 5 to 10 minutes then turn out so the top is now facing down and carefully peel off the greaseproof paper and leave to go cold.

Cut the cake into the shape you require, as it was Max and Teddy’s birthday which they share Dr Who, and with Max being such a big Dr. Who fan, I made them a Tardis shaped cake. Once you have the cake to the shape you want, start on your icing. Take the low fat cream cheese out of the fridge and mix it in a bowl with a tablespoon of flour, now it’s up you, depending on what colour/s you are using.

For the Tardis cake I set a teaspoon of white cream cheese to one side for the windows, then using blue food colouring I mixed the rest of the cream cheese to the colour I wanted, depending on the cream cheese you use you may need to add a little more flour. Then I covered the cake with the blue icing leaving the window areas clear for the white cream cheese for the glass, and using a small greaseproof paper piping bag I piped the outline of the windows and the struts and door panels, using the same icing I added a few drops of black to darken the colour and did the outline of the cake and studs.

Pop on two birthday candles for two boys who are two and sing happy birthday to them, while trying keep them from getting straight to the cake to eat the lot!

BBC1: We suspected the dogs would love the cake, because just after BBC2 made it and had finished cutting and assembling it to resemble the shape of the Tardis, he decided to make a cup of tea. He also made me a drink and brought it through to me then went back to the kitchen. All I could hear were several unsavoury words and expletives coming from the kitchen and I feared the worse. You will see from the pictures below that the finished Tardis is missing it’s plinth bottom – Max had jumped up and stolen it! As I said to BBC2 he was very lucky to have any cake left, whilst trying very hard to keep a straight face!

It was a great afternoon and very silly, but we had such a laugh and the boys loved all the attention and fuss. We also got back in time to see Dr Who – brilliant 50th Anniversary episode, well done Steven Moffet! A great day all round!

  1. Hi Chief taster Lizzy here, although I do confess to not tasting the boys birthday cake, as artistic, creative and delicious as it looked……..as when I was given the honour of cermoniously cutting it, after a chorus of happy birthday, the the overpowering odour of liver issued forth, much to the dogs delight, but not mine! …….They scoffed with relish and gusto their platefuls, and we all had a delightful fun filled birthday party with them ……….The photos are brilliant guys, and a very happy long lasting
memory of a lovely afternoon with my 4 favourite boys….cheers xxx

  2. Haha this cake is fantastic, I love that you spoiled your pups! I watched Doctor Who as well, and it made me realise how much I miss Rose! But overall, I loved it!
